Rob Biller's reports of Ring-billed Gull (1500) "not an uncommon

occurrence in East Tennessee. This pond (Middlebrook Lake) in

particular hosts a lot of gulls in the winter time. . . ." was right on

the money. Many new birders may not be aware that Middlebrook

Lake is just over the hill from Bristol Virginia's huge regional landfill

which is not even one-half mile away. Gulls are well known throughout

the world for frequenting landfills and dumps. They are often good

places to find many rare gulls. You can tell which direction the waste

area is located from Middlebrook Lake by watching the long flight

lines of gulls flying between the two sites.
