Greene County--Midway, Mohawk, Beulah, Greeneville, Tusculum, Graysburg

I spent several hours today driving around the county on a stop-and-go birding tour, hoping especially for waterfowl driven in by the cold weather throughout the eastern states. Waterfowl numbers have been down in Greene County this winter, and today was no exception. Although I found eight species, a fairly high total for Greene, individual numbers were low. Along the way, I also recorded several other species of note. Here's a partial list of the day's birds:

Canada Goose (21);
American Wigeon;
American Black Duck (2);
Mallard (66);
Northern Shoveler (6);
Green-winged Teal (8);
Redhead (male at Graysburg Hills Golf Course);
Ring-necked Duck (6);
Wild Turkey (41);
Black Vulture (33);
Turkey Vulture (48);
Northern Harrier (2);
Cooper's Hawk;
Red-tailed Hawk (2);
American Kestrel (9);
Merlin (on Highway 340 0.3 mile east of Max Lamar Cooper Bridge) (The bird, either an adult female or an immature, spent a minute or more swooping on starling-laden trees alongside Lick Creek, flushing flock after flock repeatedly. In flight, the starlings remained together in tight groups, presenting no obvious target for the Merlin, which finally perched nearby and appeared to give up.)
Killdeer (5);
Eurasian Collared-Dove (4 adjacent to West Greene High School);
Eastern Screech-Owl (red-phase bird on Snapp's Ferry Road in Greeneville at dusk, perched on a light wire like a songbird);
Red-headed Woodpecker (Green Road 0.3 mile from Highway 348);
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker;
Loggerhead Shrike (McMillian Road 0.1 mile from Shackleford Road);
Winter Wren;
Purple Finch (6 backyard feeder birds).
