South Holston Dam
overlook at lake
Sullivan Co., TN
1 Nov 2009

Common Loon - 53
Double-crested Cormorant ~200
American Coot ~ 1,000

Except for the loons, the rafts were being flushed and
scattered by two boaters who were attracted to the large
numbers of birds floating on open water. The birds would
flush and the coots fly back to their tight rafts. Smaller
numbers of cormorants would fly a short distance and alight.
Some returned to the larger raft.

Checked Boone Lake from the Beaver Creek Embayment
to the launching ramp just upstream of Boone Dam. Access
to the dam was gated. Only interesting observation was a
flock of about 200 American Robins bathing along the shoreline.

Let's go birding . . . .
