September 7, 2013 Cocke County: Dutch Bottoms (DB), Rankin Bottoms (RB) A brief visit to upper Douglas Lake this morning produced a few migrant species. Water levels are still too high for significant shoreline to appear. Highlights: Double-crested Cormorant (11, DB/RB) Great Egret (9, RB) Green Heron (5, RB) Osprey (3--2 DB, 1 RB) Spotted Sandpiper (2, RB) Least Sandpiper (fly-by, RB) Ring-billed Gull (90, DB) Lesser Black-backed Gull (juvenile, DB) Ruby-throated Hummingbird (RB) Empidonax sp. (RB) Tree Swallow (61, DB) Northern Rough-winged Swallow (DB) Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (2, RB) Yellow Warbler (2, RB) Northern Waterthrush (5, RB) No sign of the Laughing Gull or Caspian Terns reported yesterday by Darrel Wilder. However, given the vastness of the area and the rapid turnover of species during migration, this is not surprising. Don Miller Greeneville, Greene Co., TN
