Today I scoped and sketched the Great Blue Heron rookery below Fort Patrick Henry Dam from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. I counted 15 nests and 13 herons. A few herons are sitting on nests. Most nests have 1 or 2 birds standing on or nearby, or adding material to the nest. The number of nests and birds is greater than what was observed at my first visit on March 20. I also observed one pair of herons mating on the nest. One large nest is located at the same level as the higher nests, but is located about 300 yards downriver from the main rookery. One heron was sitting on the nest today. I did not see any other species of birds around the rookery.
