With all of the crazy weather we’ve been having lately, it must’ve blown in
a duck whose habitat is normally in the Alaska/British Columbia and
Newfoundland. This is considered a “life” bird by many because it is a
once in a lifetime opportunity.

KBT RARE BIRD ALERT

A Harlequin Duck has found its way to the Kingsport Birding Trail (KBT),
which is well outside the normal range for the species, in a probable
weather related event. Brookie and Jean Potter of Elizabethton, TN
originally found and reported the rare occurrence of this species
yesterday, January 31, 2013. The Potter’s were birding along the KBT behind
Riverfront Seafood Company when they spotted the duck actively diving and
feeding in the South Fork Holston River. Word spread quickly and nearly 20
local birders were able to get the bird into their scope views. For some it
was the first time they had identified this species in the wild and thus
qualified as an addition to their “Life List” of birds. Others on site
reminisced about the previous local record in 2000 when a Harlequin Duck
made an extended appearance at the South Holston Weir Dam near Bristol, TN.
The Harlequin Duck was relocated this morning, February 1, 2013 directly
behind the Riverfront Seafood Company at 1777 Netherland Inn Road,
Kingsport, TN.
