[Bristol-Birds] Hunter and Worley discover Golden Eagle wearing satellite receiver !

The Golden Eagle shown
at the left was photographed
today, 17 Feb 2011,
and two days earlier on
Tuesday, wearing a satellite
receiver which can be seen
on the nape (back of neck).
It was photographed on
Clinch Mountain in Russell
County, VA by Tom Hunter
and Dave Worley of the
Bristol Bird Club's Clinch Mountain Golden Eagle Group which has
been helping study the species in Southwest Virginia. They have
been keeping track of two eagles coming to a deer carcass located
on the face of the mountain. Plans are being made to capture the
bird that does not have a receiver and get it banded and a satellite
receiver attached.
The project now has placed transmitters on about a half dozen eagles
on Clinch Mountain. The BBC team is working to get tracking
information from the birds to see which one has been at the site where
this photo was made today. That would indicate whether it is
one of the local birds or a "foreign" bird equipped somewhere further
north in the Appalachians. If it is not a local bird, the door is open
to attempt to capture both birds and get two new receivers in the field.
A bird, photographed during late January of this year on Clinch Mountain,
wearing a satellite receiver, was determined to be the same bird
caught and marked last year, Jan 14, 2010, on Clinch Mountain. It had
been tracked into the northeast and had been in the Connecticut area
during the summer months. The present determinations by Hunter and
Worley, have been excellent contributions to the study. Both birders
have become extremely skilled and very experienced. They have spent
many long days afield.
