I just received a phone call from Lorraine Whitson, a resident in the town of
Unicoi, Unicoi County, near the Buffalo Valley Golf Course.

Lorraine is hosting a hummingbird. The bird is not a newcomer, having
apparently stayed around with some other lingering hummers late this fall until
this bird was the only one still in residence.

She called me after reading my bird column in The Erwin Record about looking
forward to what species might show up in 2012.

During this cold snap, she has been changing the sugar solution frequently to
avoid freezing, and getting the feeder out early morning before sunrise.

This is not her first winter hummingbird experience. She hosted a Rufous
Hummingbird several years ago. (She thinks it was in 2005).

I told her I would get the word out, and she sounds agreeable to people coming
to see the bird and would also like to have the bird banded.

Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN

P.S. If anyone wants her contact information, just email me directly. Thanks.
