Walked upstream from the American Way access to the greenbelt trail along Reedy Creek in Kingsport this morning mainly to try and relocate the pair of Red-shouldered Hawks that had been found nesting here in past years. I did not find any evidence of their presence, but it sure was a nice walk. One of the first birds I had on the trail was a Hooded Warbler, my first of this spring. One pair of Yellow-crowned Night Herons were sitting on a nest just up the trail from the entrance. This was the only nest or herons I saw walking from where I started up to the Exchange Place. There was a magnificent display of blooming spring wildflowers on a steep hillside above the trail. Beautiful double-fist sized clumps of hepatica blooms were common...some white, others with a hint of purple or pink. Large carpets of Spring Beauty and Troutlily were also in bloom along with Trillium, Phlox, Dutchman's Breeches, Violets, Dwarf Larkspur and others I could not identify on the spot. Well worth the short walk.
