The Lee & Lois Chapter of TOS has the following up-coming events:

1. NIGHTJAR SURVEYS--there will be three:
Two survey routes will be run on Tuesday evening, May 29 (The rain
check date for these trips is Thursday, May 31)
Dry Creek Rd. route Leaders: Don Holt and Dianne Draper
Milligan route Leaders: Joe McGuiness and Kim
Stroud
To participate in either of these, to eat with the group, meet at
Bellacino's on South Roan St. (Food City Parking Lot) in Johnson City at 7:00
p.m. The groups will set out at 8:15 p.m. from the Bellacino's area of the
parking lot, so if you do not want to eat with the group, but do want to
participate in one of the surveys, be at the lot before 8:15 so you are ready
to leave at 8:15.
The third survey will be in the Fish Springs area in eastern Carter
County. This survey will be on Friday, June 1. Leaders are Joe McGuiness and
Kim Stroud. To eat with the group, meet at Primo's Italian Restaurant, 151
Hudson Drive in Elizabethton at 7:00 p.m. The group will leave at 8:15 p.m.
from Primo's.
The surveys work as follows: each survey follows a prescribed route
which is used each year. There ten stops, about one mile apart. At each stop,
participants count Whip-poor-wills and Chuck-will's-widows heard during a timed
six minute interval. The final reports are turned in by the survey trip
leaders. Realistically, counting begins at the first stop around 8:45 to 9:00
p.m. so the survey usually does not finish before 10:00 p.m.

2. REGULAR CLUB JUNE MEETING--The regular June Club meeting will be on
Tuesday, June 5 beginning at 7:00 p.m., but at this point, the meeting place is
still under consideration--our usual meeting place at Milligan College probably
will not be available in June. Watch this list serv or mailing list for more
information on the meeting place. Two main agenda items for the meeting are
planning of the Club's summer Carter County bird count (to be held Saturday,
June 9) and planning of the Annual Club Picnic, Saturday, July 14, at the
Harris Pavilion of Rotary Park, Johnson City. The program will be a
description of birding a small part of England by club member Roy Knispel.

Prior to the June 5 meeting, some members will meet at Bellacino's Italian
Restaurant on South Roan St. (Food City Parking Lot) in Johnson City around
5:30 p.m. to eat and socialize before the meeting. ALL are invited and welcome
to the meeting and to Bellacino's.

3. SPRING CARTER COUNTY BIRD COUNT--Saturday, June 9. This count will be
planned at the club meeting June 5.

REPORT on the nightjar field trip to the Patton Simmons Cemetery after the May
1 meeting: about 12 club members car-pooled to the Patton-Simmons Cemetery
after the club meeting to listen for nightjars. At least 4 Chuck-will's-widow
calls were heard by most of the members. One fairly clear call was from the
road about 1/4 mile before we entered the cemetery. One clear, nearby call was
heard by most at around 9:45 p.m. The group ended the trip about 10 p.m.

If you have questions about the meeting, nightjar surveys, or other club
matters, please feel free to call me or send email.

Thank you.
