Herndon Bird club activities and events for May and preliminary
information on June events:
Saturday, May 14--Bird walk at Sycamore Shoals Historic Site in
Elizabethton--2-hour bird walk in the Sycamore Shoals area--meet in the
parking lot at 8 a.m.--Leader is Bryan Stevens.
This birdwalk is scheduled to coincide with International Bird Migration
Day. Target birds are migrating and newly arrived nesting birds,
especially warblers and vireos. Wear shoes that are sufficiently
waterproof to handle walking in wet grass.
Saturday, May 21--field trip to Hampton Creek Cove Natural Area in Roan
Mountain--meet at the Hampton Creek Cove parking lot at 8:00 a.m. Rick
Knight will lead the trip. The trip will include walking about 1.5
miles around the area--wear boots that will accommodate walking in some
wet grass. Target birds include warblers breeding in the area (Am.
Redstart, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Yellow Warbler)
and flycatchers such as Willow Flycatcher. Those who desire will eat
after the field trip at a Roan Mountain restaurant to be chosen at the time.
Preliminary June events:
Regular monthly meeting: Tuesday, June 7--the meeting will be held in
room E106 at Northeast State Community College, Elizabethton Campus. at
7:30 p.m. NOTE the change in LOCATION and MEETING TIME. Park in the
parking lot off Hwy 91--E106 is in the second building back from the
parking lot. More information on this meeting will follow.
Single County Bird Counts:
Sunday, June 12-----Unicoi County
Saturday, June 18----Carter County
These counts will be planned at the June meeting Tuesday, June 7 and,
following the meeting, more information will be available.
