Visit to the Big Bald Bird Banding Station--Joe McGuiness, Kathy Noblet and Roy Knispel visited the bird banding station on Big Bald on Saturday morning, June 26. Thanks to the bird banding crew--Mark, Kathy, Lynn and Teddy--for their hospitality and instruction as they went about their work. Ten species were banded: Red-breasted Nuthatch Red-eyed Vireo Robin Cedar Waxwing Black-throated Green Warbler Chestnut-sided Warbler Black & White Warbler Canada Warbler Indigo Bunting Junco Many of the birds banded were juncos--other birds seen were Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Chimney Swift Many pictures of the birds and banding operation are available for viewing on Kathy Noblet's Flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/24288421@N03/sets/72157624370449446/ The URL for the banding station is http://www.bigbirdbanding.org A banding crew headed by Rad Mayfield will be at the station this Saturday, July 3. Meet at the U.S. Forest Service headquarters building in Unicoi at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 3. Bring water and snacks or a lunch--folks will return to Unicoi by about 2:30 p.m. The drive from Unicoi to the parking spot takes about an hour and there is an up-hill hike of one-half to three-quarters of a mile to the banding station.
