2011 Mendota Watch closes today with 10,000 plus raptors counted ! Wednesday, 5 October, is the final day scheduled for the successful 2011 hawk watch at Mendota on Clinch Mountain. Tom Hunter kept the vigil from August to October. Above, Ron Harrington finishes the setup of the popular BBC display on hawk migration that was on the front row at the Mendota Heritage Festival where we've been a small center piece for many years. Carolyn Coffey and Wallace Coffey greeted the public, responded to many questions, handed out BBC brochures and collected emails and information on many new birders who stopped in. They were not only new to our knowledge but new faces for our eyes. Several are now subscribed to Bristol-Birds Net. Harrington went on to the Mendota Fire Tower to count hawks for the day and to welcome festival goers who joined him. Carolyn and Wallace manned the BBC hawk migration display from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival was held just as the hawk count was starting to pick up steam on Saturday, 10 Sept.
