Also of interest concerning the Harlequin Duck at Kingsport: There are only 4 previous records in Tennessee. The first two records consisted of birds shot by duck hunters and identified later; one specimen was donated to U.S. National Museum. These were in Jan 1984 (Norris Lake) and Jan 1985 (Cheatham Lake). Another was the famous individual that spent a month at the South Holston River weir in Jan 2000. Lastly was a one-day-wonder in Feb 2000 at Chilhowee Lake. Thus, the current bird is just the second that birders have been able to sucessfully chase in the state. Better get over there!
