Glen Eller and I spent the middle of the day on the Linear Trail in Erwin and on Unaka Mtn. The female Greater Scaup which Joe McGuiness reported to me earlier was still on the pond along the Linear Trail in Erwin. Probably the best, closest viewing I have had of a Greater Scaup. Also, 2 Green Herons and 8 Wood Ducks, five of which were ducklings. Highlights on Unaka Mtn were a Wild Turkey Broad-winged Hawk Magnolia Warbler Scarlet Tanager Also Red-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, a number of Veerys, and Black-throated Green, Black and White, Chestnut-sided and Hooded Warblers and Ovenbird. Directions to the Greater Scaup: if coming down I-26 from the north, take the Jackson-Love exit and follow the road to the left over the interstate and the Nolichucky River. Turn left at the Riverview Industrial Park sign and follow Industrial Drive along the Linear Trail past the first parking lot and the Morrill, Blue Linx and Impact Plastics establishments, to the second parking lot. There is a wooden walkway which takes the trail across the pond. The Scaup has been resting on a log in the water not far to the left of the bridge (as you face the pond from the parking lot) or has been swimming and feeding to the left of the bridge.
