On the day before Mother's Day, I met my dad in Elizabethton at 7:30 am for a
great day of birding. Right off the bat, we hit a pocket of warblers in his
yard that reminded us of migrations in the 1970's. We got great looks at and
heard singing:
* Blackpoll (1)
* Magnolia Warbler (2)
* American Redstart (1)
* Bay-Breasted Warbler (1)
* Blackburnian Warbler (1)
* Eastern Wood Peewee (1)
* Swainson's Thrush ( several eating cherries in the weeping cherry
tree)
We then headed over to Unicoi and had a Swainson's Warbler singing in the Rock
Creek Campground. A trip over sopped in Unaka Mountain yielded the following
highlights:
* Canada Warblers (5)
* Magnolia Warblers (3)
* Veery (5)
* Chestnut Sided Warblers (4)
* Broad-Winged Hawk (1)
* Black-Throated Blue Warbler (1)
We finished the day with stops at Paddle Creek, Rooty Branch, and Flat Woods
Road and had some nice birds. Our father/son day yielded 18 species of
warblers and was a lot of fun!
