Yesterday, while participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count, Sam
Evans and I found a great blue heron rookery near Damascus. It is
located on a ridge just above where the South Fork of the Holston River
merges with Laurel Creek . It can be seen from Hwy U.S. 58. Currently
there are seven nests. There were three birds standing on or near the
nests. The map coordinates: 36.650682, -81.832246. It is less than a
mile on your left after you cross the South Fork bridge if you are
driving from Abingdon to Damascus. Look for a large rocky cliff where
the streams meet.
