The outreach effort of the Bristol Bird Club was again very giving this afternoon when our membership enjoyed our annual picnic. Under the leadership of President Dave Worley, members donated 11 bags of black oil sunflower seed to the Steele Creek Park Nature Center. The seed is valued at $190.00. That'll keep those feeders busy for a few months. Despite a mid-afternoon rainstorm, the skies cleared and the sun swept over BBC members and the picnic was again a fabulous success. Birders who brought food and appetites to the club's annual event included: Rick Knight Don Holt April Mattes Diane Draper Michele Draper Janet Brown Bill Charles Larry McDaniel Janice Martin Ethel Mason Bill Grigsby Ed Burke Julee Burke Diana Worley Dave Worley John Hay John Moyle Mike Poe Charlie Parker Carolyn Coffey Wallace Coffey Lois Cox Wilma Boy Judy Roach Mary Erwin As an extra bonus, three members of the naturalist staff of the nature center took a good group to a nearby park cave where they were shown a Cave Salamander ! What a treat. That caused much excitement. Most people have never seen anything like that. Two or three birders left at dusk to go search for Whip-poor-wills along the park's eastern boundary. We also enjoyed a copy of the Tennessee Conservationist magazine which has just arrived in the mail. Don Holt's wonderful article entitled "Lilies of Tennessee" was a charmer along with the many spectacular color photos by BBC members. Also Kevin Hammed and Tom Laughlin had an excellent article and photos about the "The Four-Toed Salamander" which they have been researching at the Weir Dam below South Holston Dam. Our picnic was the last volley from our out-going President Bill Grigsby. President Worley returns for his third term as a BBC president and has led us through some of our most exciting years. Vice-President Dr. John Moyle chatted a bit about a more aggressive and extended field trip program for the 2007-2008 club year. I overhead talk that the BBC Rainforest Adventures Committee has Ecuador in their dreams. The country is located on the west coast of South America. This may be the 2008 trip destination. In 2006 BBC birders went to Trinidad. Janice Martin's family was busy moving today to their new home just off TN Rt. 126 near the south end of Steele Creek Park. She says the next time you see her car she will be displaying the beautiful "bluebird" tag that most of our Tennessee birders have which supports nongame wildlife in the state. The Martins are selling their present home on Euclid Ave. in Bristol Virginia. Big Dave Worley was the chief chef today and the food was as good as always. Janice Martin, social coordinator, put together the logistics for the event and it was as fine as ever. What a way for a new BBC president to begin his term in office. Let's go birding.......
