This morning, February 10, 2002, I found a light phase Rough-legged Hawk in the field across from the intersection of Routes 656 and 80 in the Elk Garden area of the county. It was hunting over the field very close to the road. There was another Rough-legged Hawk in the same area about 3 weeks ago. I went back home to get Laverne and we went back to try and relocate the hawk again. We did not relocate the Rough-legged Hawk but we did find 2 Golden Eagles in the same area. One was a juvenile that was soaring very low over the area. It landed on the ground twice and we were able to get very good looks at it. The other was a second year bird that was perched in the top of a tree in the middle of the field. We were able to approach within 50 to 100 yards of the bird before it took flight. It was quite a morning. Tom & Laverne Hunter Russell County Bird Club __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo!
