Hi Fellow Birders:

Here are the results of the Glade Spring VA Christmas Bird Count, which was
held on January 4, 2003. It was mostly cloudy, cold and a little windy early,
but as the skies cleared and the sun broke through the temperatures moderated
to a "tolerable" level during the afternoon. The temperatures ranged from the
mid twenties to the upper thirties for the day, and there was a trace of
participation in the form or flurries in the morning. Time in the field
ranged from 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. About 2.5 hours were spent owling.

Twenty one enthusiastic participants rolled out early to enter the chase: Dan
Kegley, Mike and Joan Evans, Randy Smith, Mike Hagy, Ed and Peter Morgan,
Jeff Larson, Wallace Coffey, Rick Knight, Tom Horsch, Larry McDaniel, Don
Holt, Chris O'Bryan, Rack Cross, Jo Ann Detta, Marty Huber, Suzanne Reid,
Diane Harris, Betty Edmondson and yours truly. Thanks to all who took part!!

We had a great time counting 9,884 individual birds consisting of 68 species.
This is compared to 9,153 individuals and 71 species last year. Based on
count records for the last 25 years, we had new high numbers for Mallard
Duck, Rock Dove, Mourning Dove, Northern Flicker, Eastern Phoebe, and Horned
Lark. The one Redhead is only the second one seen since 1977 (One in '99).
