See below for the Mendota Hawk Watch Report for 9/17/17. The compiler
was Larry McDaniel. Thanks to Larry and all those who showed up to help.
Sam Evans and I will at the tower tomorrow. Come on up and join in the
fun. Lots of birds in the pipeline. Yesterday, Rockfish Gap (On the Blue
Ridge just off I-64 on Afton Mtn.) reported *2561 *Broad-winged hawks.
Today they counted *7045* !

It was a good day at that fire tower.
Several people were there for the 9 am hour. I got there at 10:10 and
stayed until 5:45. Others came and went throughout the day. It was
surprisingly hot and mostly sunny but there were some clouds that helped
out the viewing. Many of the hawks were very high but quite a few were
flying low as well.
Broad-winged Hawks - 507
Osprey - 1 (last bird of the day)
Northern Goshawk - 1 (close looks, mostly below eye level for this
sub-adult bird)
Cooper's Hawk - 2
American Kestrel - 1
Observers: George Larkins, Stephen Hopp, Barbara Kingsolver, Ed Davis,
Dan Johnson, Karol Lynn Johnson, Lori Ownbe, Teresa Hutson, Laura
Castle, John Clunce? (sorry, I can't read my own writing) Fred Osborne,
Donna Osborne, Dan Huffine, Angie Huffine, Andrew Huffine, and John
Tomko. Sorry if I missed anyone.
