On Saturday, 02/17, I spent the "snow day" doing the Great Backyard Bird Count. My three sites were 4027 Glen Alpine (3.5 hours), northern half of the Meadowview Golf Course (2 hours) and the Holston River from Wilcox to Rotherwood Estates (1.5 hours). Highlights were: 4027 Glen Alpine (30 species): Fox Sparrow (pair), Hermit Thrush (1), Cooper's Hawk ( one female), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1), Golden-crowned Kinglet(1), Swamp Sparow (5). Meadowview (20 species): Fox Sparrow (1), Swamp Sparrow (21), Winter Wren (1), Brown Thrasher (1), Lesser Scaup (one male), Great Blue Heron (1), Cooper's Hawk (one male). Holston River (33 species): American Robin (69), Golden-crowned Kinglet (1), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (1), Great Blue Heron (3), American Kestrel (1), Gadwall (16), Hooded Merganser (5), Double-crested Cormorant (7), American Coot (16), Mallards (98), Ring-billed Gull (34), Killdeer (11), Spotted Sandpiper (1), Yellow-rumped Warbler (7 together and one elsewhere), Black Vultures (70), Northern Pintail (3 males), Black Duck (2), Canada Goose (77).
