Allen Boynton from VDGIF in Virginia and I birded the WalMart Distrubution
Center area and ponds Sat Morning (Feb19) and had basically the same waterfowl
species as reported by Don Miller in his earlier post, with the addition of 8
Shovelers and 7 more Pintails than he reported. We had 3 Marsh Wrens and 1
Virginia Rail in the cattails in the wet area before you get to the 3rd pond.
We also had a Red-tail Hawk and 9 Savannah Sparrows.

Allen and I proceded to the Lick Creek WMA and found an astonishing 12
Harriers, 15 Pipits, 2 Wood Duck, 3 Ring-neck Ducks and a Hooded Merganser, 3
Kestrels, 1 Brown Creeper and a Screech Owl responded to Allens whistled call.

It was a good birding day showing an old friend from Virginia around in our
friendly confins of East TN.

Greene County: Wal-Mart Distribution Center ( WMDC ) and miscellaneous other
sites

I birded WMDC late this morning, with good results. As I entered the property,
I met Glen Eller and a guest from Virginia leaving. Their list was somewhat
different from mine, and I'm hoping that Glen will post it, as it contains some
notable observations that I missed.

My day list includes the following (all observations at WMDC unless otherwise
noted):

Tundra Swan
Gadwall (11)
American Black Duck (5)
Northern Pintail (3)
Green-winged Teal (3--1 WMDC , 2 elsewhere)
Canvasback (6)
Ruddy Duck
Wild Turkey (2 along Highway 70 south of Greeneville )
Northern Harrier (2)
Cooper's Hawk (rural site south of Greeneville )
Marsh Wren (represents 14th consecutive year the species has been recorded in
the county)
American Pipit
Common Yellowthroat (male)
Savannah Sparrow
Swamp Sparrow (2)
