I just wanted to chime in with a little more information on the upcoming Annual Meeting in Farmville. The April 1 registration deadline is approaching and I wanted to let everyone know what's going to be happening down here in Southside VA. The Annual Meeting is a mini-convention with a focus on field trips. While we do have a business meeting, exhibitors, and a technical paper session, the field trips are my favorite part. We will be visiting the region's several state parks, including the new High Bridge Trail, and Red Hill, the final home and resting place of Patrick Henry. Other field trips will focus on our large lakes and the many square miles of mixed farmland down here. What birds might we see? We're expecting about 100 species, including Prothonotary Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Blue Grosbeak, Whip-poor-will, Chuck-wills-widow, Louisiana Waterthrush, Grasshopper Sparrow and Kentucky Warbler, to name just a few. Of course, when you put that many birders in the field, you never know what surprises may turn up. The other highlight of the meeting is the Saturday evening banquet. Our speaker this year is Ted Floyd, the editor of Birding magazine and the author of the Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America. Ted's banquet topic will be "Night Birding: The Final Frontier." Everyone who registers will also receive a free copy of the ABA's new "Let's Go Birding!" pamphlet, which Ted has co-authored. Ted will be with us the entire weekend, so you will have an opportunity to go birding with him and get him to sign your field guide. You can download a registration form on the website of our local bird club at: http://web.me.com/annebjacobs/Site/VSO__2010.html I look forward to seeing many of you in Farmville four weeks from now.
