-----Original Message----- From: "Scott Somershoe" <Scott.Somershoe@xxxxxx> Date: Tue, 08 Dec 2009 15:02:00 To: TN-birds<tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [TN-Bird] CBC's in TN All, My concern over the CBC's in TN that got Chris Sloan all worked up is basically hinged on a couple things: 1. I feel we have way too much overlap of dates for counts, especially within one region of the state (i.e. middle TN), which is likely killing turnout at many counts in the region and outside. I know I would be participating in many more counts if they were spread out in an organized and standardized manner annually. I would suggest that CBC compilers statewide communicate as a whole to see if we can better organize the count dates. This would also include a fairly "set" schedule so such and such a count is always the first Saturday or the first Sunday, etc. of the count period. Many counts are on a good set day within the count period, i.e. New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, etc., but I think we can do a better job to maximize participation. I recognize there will ALWAYS be overlap as we only have three weekends in the count period and a couple holidays free for the working folk, but I think concessions could be made. This would lead to greater turnout of birders that are currently limited by this significant overlap. Maybe it is just Chris and myself that would like to do more CBC's, but I suspect there are many others that would like to get involved in other counts. 2. I personally would also like to see compilers/CBC coordinators posting their count dates and contact info on TN-Bird and Bristol-Birds. These forums are there for birders to communicate these events. I have seen info on a handful of counts posted in these forums, but not very many. Posting may also encourage people that follow the list-serves (members or skulkers) but don't yet participate in counts to inquire and participate. I recognize the value and purpose of posting counts, dates, and contacts on the Audubon site, but having them also posted on TN-Bird and Bristol-Birds would be really helpful to many people. According to Steve Stedman there are a total of 30 counts in TN. ONLY 20 are in the Audubon database as of yesterday (see below). I personally would like to know where the other counts are, when they are, how to participate, etc. Here are the CBC's listed on the Audubon site for this coming season with dates: 1. Clay County 2009-12-16 Terry Campbell 2. Chattanooga 2009-12-19 Kevin Calhoon 3. Clarksville 2009-12-19 Deborah Hamilton 4. Columbia 2009-12-19 Tommy Edwards 5.
