I heard from David Caton in Erwin, who reports 10 crossbills now comprise the
flock at his home. The ratio is six males to four females.

On Saturday, I went with Brookie and Jean Potter to try to view the birds.
David Kirshke was there to try to get some photos.

We left disappointed. For two-and-a-half hours, the crossbills were no show. We
were there from roughly 8 to 10:30 a.m., which is the time when the birds
usually arrive, according to David Caton.

We now think so many people staking out their feeders could have spooked them.

David Caton also said there was a hawk attack on Sunday. Identify of hawk and
whether it was successful isn't known. If that hawk had been around Saturday as
well, I suppose that might have spooked them.
