Buchanan County Bird Club members Ed and Mary Talbott, Ed and Michelle Talbott, and Chazzy Talbott enjoyed a great day of hiking at the Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve near Lebanon in Russell County on Saturday. Michelle spotted our first raptor of the day which turned out to be a juvenile Golden Eagle circling above Big Cedar Creek. Ed Talbott, Jr., pointing out some disturbed leaves, commented that there had recently been a grouse in the area. A few seconds later a Ruffed Grouse popped off the ground just a few feet from where we were standing. Signs of Beaver activity were all along the creek and we located the lodge dug into the side of the creek bank but did not see any Beavers along the creek. On the hike up to Copper Ridge, I spotted a pair of Bald Eagles sitting together in a gap between Big Cedar Creek and the Clinch River. Luckily the Copper Ridge Trail took us close to the pair of eagles and we all got great looks at these magnificent birds. On the way out, Michelle spotted a Great Blue Heron standing on the main top of a large cedar tree - looking much like the top-piece of a Christmas Tree. Other interesing birds included White-throated and Field Sparrows, Belted Kingfishers, American Wigeons, and Brown Creepers. Below is a list of species for the day.
