The Bald Eagles' nesting on the Holston River in Hawkins County at the west
edge of Kingsport, TN, fledged two eaglets yesterday, May 23. This is the
region's first eagle nesting in the upper Holston River watershed. The eggs
were laid in February.
The eagles built their nest on a small island site next to Clay Island in the
army ammunitions plant. Clay Island has hosted a large Great Blue Heron
rookery which had 150 nests last year and about 50 nests of the Double-crested
Cormorants. It has been active for about 10 years.

Evidently the eagles caused problems for the Great Blue Herons and cormorants.
This year they moved their rookery across the river along a creek but still
inside the highly secured ammunitions compound.

The nest location is at 36º 31'34"N, 82º 39'18"W.

Let's go birding.....
