Ten Islands, Cocke county, by canoeDouglas Lake elevation: 968.6. TVA has kept the lake at about the same level for over 2 weeks, unusual for Sepember. Much of the shoreline and riverbottoms have dried out, and shorebird habitat is limited to to muddy stream-fed inlets.
Gayle Rice, visiting from Georgia, and I went from the Walters Bridge boat ramp up to Ten Islands. Most of the shorebirds that we saw were located about a quarter mile west of the cove where they were concentrated during yesterday's field trip.
