Southwest Virginia's longest running bird walk gets under way Saturday
(7/26) at the Creeper Trailhead in Abingdon, VA at 7:30 a.m.

Each year this is the first event of the famous VIRGINIA HIGHLANDS FESTIVAL
-- now in its 55th year.

The Southeast Tourism Society lists the festival as one of the top 20 events
of all types in the southeast. The American Bus Association has the
festival designated as one of North America's top 100 events. More than
150,000 people are expected to participate in the festival from July 26 thru
Aug. 10.

Our bird walk will be over level terrain, extending from the Creeper
Trailhead where the old Virginia Creeper locomotive is located to just
beyond the I-81 underpass. This is on Green Spring Road just two blocks
from Main Street in downtown Abingdon. This is a leisurely strole which
runs anywhere from 1.5 hrs. to 2 hrs.

It is a great time to celebrate the opening event of the festival and to
meet lots of fun people. We often get new Bristol Bird Club members from
this event. The birding has been very good, depending on the weather and
migration.

Come as you are and kickoff this great festival. Then take in the first day
of 150 antique booths under the bigtop tents covering 45,000 square feet.

The festival is a go! Enjoy.
