Double-crested Cormorants were found nesting today (3 April 2011) at Miller Island along the Holston River in Hawkins County, TN. The small rookery has, what appears to be, four Great Blue Heron nests and definitely (at the least) two (2) cormorant's nests. The cormorants sitting on nests could clearly be observed with 60x spotting scope magnification at about 650 yards. Two other cormorants were observed perched in the tree. The heron nests were at the crown of the tree above the cormorants. Because the small colony is very low in Sycamore trees, it is difficult to make sure no nests were missed in the count. This is the same location as the colony found there 20 Jan 2006 by Chris O'Bryan and Wallace Coffey which had 15 nests and was again found active on 4 Feb 2006 by O'Bryan, Coffey, Charlie Parker and Rick Phillips. Let's go birding . . . . Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
