These photos were taken of a diving bird feeding in the South Fork
Holston

River along Riverside Road at its intersection with Rock Ledge Road.

It appears to be a Common Merganser. The bird would dive and

swim into the flow of the current that was heavy from the discharge

of the South Holston Dam power generation farther upstream. The

bird easily kept its relative position in the river and would surface at

the approximate same location after each dive. It stayed under

for long periods. The photos were taken thru the glass of the front

window of the car since there was no easy place to park and trees

were obstructing much repositioning. After maybe six or eight dives

it went under and I could not relocate the bird. The photos were

taken 18 July 2015 in eastern Sullivan County, TN
