I vacationed from May 12-May 15 on Fripp Island, S.C., near the city of Beaufort. Birding was part of the trip, but not exclusively. I saw about 70 species, including 14 species of shorebirds, including hundreds of Red Knots foraging each day on sandbars just off shore. I also observed a pair of Brown-headed Nuthatches. I've made trips to Fripp Island for several years now, back to the mid-90s at least, and have never found Brown-headed Nuthatches on the island until now. A list by the island's Audubon Club, dated back to the early 90s, does not list Brown-headed Nuthatches as being present. I have seen Brown-headed Nuthatches on nearby Hilton Head Island as well as in Chattanooga, TN. A few other highlights: Common Nighthawks and Chuck-Will's Widows Painted Buntings (many singing males) Black-crowned Night Herons Nesting Ospreys (at least three pairs on island) Bryan Stevens, Hampton, TN ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
