24 May 2007
"Bird Island", Cherokee Lake, Hamblen Co. portion
(near Panther Creek S.P.)

Late this afternoon, Michael Sledjeski & Leslie Gibbens
took me out in their motorized canoe to view this rookery.

Present were:
Dbl-cr. Cormorant: about 70 nests, most with large young.
Great Blue Heron: 20+ nests, most with large young.
Great Egret: 10 present, but not on nests (unlike last June).
Blk-cr. Night-Heron: 25+ nests, most with adults apparently still
        incubating or brooding.

Spotted Sandpiper: 1

Of interest were 4 or 5 adult night-herons running around on the
ground (like chickens) picking up dropped fish underneath
cormorant nests.

Thanks, Michael & Leslie.
