Glen Eller and I spent some time at Carver's Gap and at the Scenic
Overlook at the Miller Farmstead this morning.
Highlights:
Along Hwy 361/362 on the way to Roan Mtn.
Wild Turkeys 2
White-tailed Deer 4 2 doe and 2 fawns
Carver's Gap:
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
R.T. Hummingbird 10 minimum--probably lots more
Red-breasted Nuthatch 6 minimum
Golden-crowned Kinglet 2
Brown Creeper 2
Raven 1
Tennessee Warbler 4
Cape May Warbler 2
Magnolia Warbler 1
Black-throated Green Warbler 1
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1
Red Crossbills 7 minimum A flock of seven flew over and
one peeled off. That bird went from treetop to treetop, calling a few
times from each perch, until it seemed that it had called from the top
of every live and dead Red Spruce and Frasier Fir around the parking lot
area. We heard a few calls before this flock came over, which could
have been some of the same or different birds.
In addition we had Crows, Towhee, Gray Catbirds, Juncos and Goldfinches
Scenic Overlook off the Miller Farmstead Parking lot:
Tennessee Warbler 3
Palm Warbler 1
Cape May Warbler 1
plus T. Titmouse and C. Chickadees
Overall, the bird activity was a little less than we had hoped it might
be, but a fairly steady breeze may have accounted for this.
