On Sunday, 11 June 2006, the Herndon chapter of TOS held its 13th annual Carter County Summer Bird Count. The first was in 1992, but the count was not done in 1997 & 2002. The methodology for this count was the same as for our Spring, Fall, and Christmas counts, with the area limited to Carter Co. 15 observers in 6 parties spent 59 diurnal party hours & 4 nocturnal party hours in the field. Weather conditions were favorable, although it was hot by mid-day. 5634 birds of 117 species were found. The species total is a record high, compared to an average of 110.75 species (range 105-116). No new species were added to the cumulative list. Most unusual this year were an Osprey seen at Ripshin Lake and an adult female Peregrine Falcon seen flying over Roan Mtn village. Also noteworthy were: N. Bobwhite - 2 (has become very scarce in Co.) Yellow-cr. Night-Heron - 5 Red-shld. Hawk - 2 (by 2 parties, rare in summer here) Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1 Alder Flycatcher - 2 Willow Flycatcher - 6 Least Flycatcher - 6 Warbling Vireo - 1 Hermit Thrush - 1 (20 spp. of warblers) Golden-wg. Warbler - 5 Blackburnian Warbler - 5 Prairie Warbler - 2 (scarce in Co.) Kentucky Warbler - 1 Blue Grosbeak - 3 Red Crossbill - 1 Pine Siskin - 16 For you flat-landers out there, we also had: Ruffed Grouse - 7 Com. Raven - 10 Red-br. Nuthatch - 6 Winter Wren - 5 Golden-cr. Kinglet - 9 Veery - 13 Chestnut-sd. Warbler - 37 Black-thr. Blue Warbler - 65 Canada Warbler - 17 Rose-br. Grosbeak - 10 Notable misses were: Yellow-thr.
