I received an email from Billie Merritt of Elizabethton, TN, telling me she has not seen her visiting Rufous Hummingbird for the past two days.
The female Rufous Hummingbird, banded in December 2006 by Mark Armstrong, was first reported to me by Billie Merritt on Nov. 13, 2006, but had been at her feeder before she contacted me.
I last saw the bird, along with Reece Jamerson and Gilbert Derouen, on Friday, April 6.
Billie said the bird remained at the feeders almost the entire day on Tuesday, April 10.
The bird did not make its usual visits on Wednesday, April 11, and has not reappeared today.
The bird's five-month stay seems exceptional to me. I am wondering if Rufous Hummingbirds usually linger as late as April.
The hummingbird became a little local celebrity during her stay. No less than three newspapers published articles about her visit.
