Meadowview Road Rookery above Steele Creek Wetlands Bristol Tennessee (near US 11W) Sullivan County Ron Carrico sent a text message (via Rob Biller) this evening at 8:08 p.m. to point out that he believes the Meadowview Road Rookery of Great Blue Herons could have more than 10 to 12 nests this spring. He said that last year he believed there were just 5 or 6 nests. This is the same rookery discovered Friday, Mar 21, 2008, along Steele Creek by Fred Martin of the Bristol Bird Club. Janice Martin, Wallace Coffey and Fred determined it was Bristol Tennessee's first "incorporated" because it is in the city limits. The site is located just above the road and is viewed from US 11W. It is high atop a ridge which belongs to E.G. Moody. It was believed to have about a dozen nests when found four years ago but most of the years since only about five or six nests were easily seen. Most of that is due to the nest being wrapped around a steep and sharp end to a tall ridge. Carrico suggests the best place to view this rookery is the parking lot of the Bristol Plastic Surgery Center on 11W (between Bristol Regional Medical Center and Toyota auto sales). He notes that leaves will hide most of this rookery from view any day now. Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
