A group from Blue Ridge Birders (Glen Eller, Scott Jackson-Ricketts, Allen Boynton, Katherine Higgins) birded Burkes Garden today. Notable finds included Loggerhead Shrike (2), Rough-legged Hawk (2), Horned Lark (~100), Brown Thrasher (1), Barred Owl (1), Red-shouldered Hawk (1), and Green-winged Teal (~25). We could not find an eagle of any sort despite valiant searching. All told we saw about 30 species. Our trip to Burkes Garden was great as usual. It got all the way up to 22°F today and the roads were well-plowed. We were very pleased with the looks we got at the roughlegs and one of the shrikes was hunting. The greenwings were brilliant in the bright sun. The Brown Thrasher was a surprise.
