The Bristol Bird Club met Tuesday, 20 May 2014, and heard Bryan Stevens tell members he is working with the staff of the Bristol Herald Courier newspaper to begin publishing his very-popular bird column in the Sunday editions. Stevens said the first publication date appears to be the first Sunday in June which would actually be 1 June. He told members that, over the years, his column has run regularly in four newspapers of the region. One locally-tailored column is presently running in the Erwin Record. Until earlier this year, it had appeared for many years in the Elizabethton Star where he was a fulltime member of the news staff. He said he would rely on bird photos he takes along with those already provided the newspaper and taken by Jean Potter of the Herndon TOS chapter at Elizabethton. He was in Bristol to present the club's May meeting program about birds of Northeast Tennessee. He has recently completed a big year effort to ID as many species as he could during a year in the five-county area of Northeast Tennnessee. He was able to list 203 species. He said his best year came in 2000 when he was able to get 220 species. Club members voted unanimously to accept the Nominating Committee's slate of officers for 2014-2015: President Lois Cox First Vice-President Kevin Blaylock Second Vice-President Bill Grigsby (Program Chair) Secretary Faye Wagers Treasurer Judy Roach BBC has three new members with two of them present for the meeting. Those attending were Jennifer Matherly of Kingsport and Jennifer Quinn of Scott Co., VA . A new member not attending is Clancey Deel of Richlands, VA. President Lois Cox reminded everyone that the BBC annual picnic will be held Saturday, June 7, at the Civitan Shelter in Steele Creek Park. She said the facility has been reserved and the date moved forward from July as it has been in recent years. The picnic is planned for 3 p.m. and food will be served as soon as it is ready. Kevin Blaylock offered to do the cooking. More details on food, drinks and directions will be posted later. Cox also said that arrangements were underway to find leadership for the annual fall hawk watch at the Mendota Fire Tower lookout on Clinch Mountain. Tom Hunter has told her that his health would not allow him to continue to lead the effort. Ron Harrington, who has been the coordinator of the count for many years, has agreed to work with a group of birders who will take responsibility for attempting to provide daily coverage during September when the count is conducted. No one person has been designated to chair the effort and a committee-type approach appears to be the way it may be managed. John Whinery presented ideas for various facets of managing the club's internet activities including several new approaches such as Twitter and Facebook. Cox will decide how BBC will begin the process of looking into the various aspects proposed. BBC will hold a field trip 31 May to Breaks Interstate Park on the Kentucky/Virginia line and details will follow on Bristol-Birds. Cox said birders can check www.bristolbirdclub.org for dates of field trips through July.
