January 14, 2007 Greene County--McDonald, Midway, and nearby areas I spent a little over two hours this morning in the western portion of the county, looking mainly for Icterids and raptors. A few goodies turned up, as is nearly always the case when I bird this area. Here's a list of the highlights: Snow Goose (juvenile on Highway 340 at Turner Lane, the same bird I reported on January 11) Great Egret (Wal-Mart Distribution Center, fourth pond; the bird has been here since fall) American Kestrel (15, plus 2 near Tusculum later in the day, for a total of 17) Ring-billed Gull (458+ on Highway 340) Red-headed Woodpecker (Green Road 0.4 mile from Highway 348) Horned Lark (6 on Highway 340 approximately 0.5 mile east of the Max Lamar Cooper Memorial Bridge) Savannah Sparrow Rusty Blackbird (20+ on Green Road) Brewer's Blackbird (2 on Green Road) I found the Brewer's Blackbirds in a mixed flock of several hundred grackles, red-wings, and starlings in a corn stubble field. Afraid that I would spook the flock if I got out of the car, I viewed them from the driver's seat with the engine turned off. After scanning the flock for a little while, I noticed the BRBL foraging on the edge of the group nearest to me. As I checked for others, a noisy truck came by and flushed the entire group of birds. They lit in trees a short distance away but then flew westward out of sight before I could get another look. I strongly suspect that the flock contained more than two BRBL, as it seems unlikely that I would have been fortunate enough to find the entire number.
