Bristol Area Birders:

Chris O'Bryan posted our Monday July 22 observation of the
Great Egret and the Little Blue Heron at South Holston Lake,
Washington Co., VA.

I was back to Musick's Campground on Tuesday, July 23,
and the Little Blue Heron was still around but it had moved
into Sullivan County, TN and was perched in a tree on the
shore directly across from the campground.

On Thursday, July 25, I found the Great Egret still in the
Spring Creek Embayment perched in the trees just below
where Spring Creek flows under Va. Rt. 75 and into the
lake. I spotted it from the fishing and launching area at
the end of Lake Road. I also had a couple of Orchard
Orioles near there.

Along Lake Shore Drive in Washington Co., the migration
of swallows was rather heavy. One one wire near Camp
Sequoya I saw an estimated 50 Cliff Swallows, 20 Rough-winged
Swallows and 30 Barns Swallows. There is no close colony
of Cliff Swallows near where they were perched. I could
only conclude that most of these birds were migrants.

Througout the afternoon swallows filled the sky all along the
roads near the lake.

I have not found my first shorebird in the area but it isn't
because I'm not looking. The mudflat conditions along the
east shore of South Holston at Brown's Dairy, Musick's
Campground and Spring Creek are ideal.

You can find a nice build up of Killdeer on most of these flats.

As usual, Canada Geese are flocking everywhere.

Let's go birding.
