Bristol Area Birders,
Yesterday, May 4, members from the Bristol, Russell Co. and Buchanan Co.
bird clubs went birding at Roger and Lynda Mayhorns' house on Compton Mtn.
in Buchanan Co. VA. Present were Dave & Diane Worley, Fred & Janice Martin,
Ed & Michelle Talbott, Ed & Barbara Caudill and Sheldon & Orpha Woods.

Despite the intermittent drizzle the group shared a great time, the food and
the birding both being good. First the group birded around the 26 acres of
the Mayhorn home. Hooded Warblers, American Redstarts, Ovenbirds,
Yellow-breasted chats, Yellow Warblers,Black-throated Greens,
Black-and-white Warblers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins, one female
Purple Finch, Gray Catbirds,Wood Thrushes, Brown Thrashers, Pileated
Woodpeckers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Eastern Towhees and
dozens of American Goldfinches were some of the birds seen and heard.

After a sumptuous lunch the group went in search of the Cerulean Warbler
that had been found by Roger Mayhorn a week or so before on the mountain
road leading to the Mayhorn home. The group not only found that male
Cerulean, but found another singing male nearby. A Scarlet Tanager gave
everyone great looks as he moved around high in tall tree, his brilliant red
plumage contrasting sharply with the green foliage. While searching for the
Cerulean the group also got good looks at a pair of American Redstarts.

The rain did not dampen spirits nor the birding. It was a very enjoyable
spring day and those who did not make it missed a good time and were missed
by those there. The Mayhorns hope to have a similar birding event again in
September, when the fall migrating warblers come flooding over their
mountain.
