On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the Russell County Bird Club and the Russell County Tourism Committee will sponsor a bird walk at the Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve beginning at 8 AM.

Participants will meet at the parking lot at the preserve or may also meet at 7:45 AM at Lebanon Town Hall on Main Street, Lebanon to carpool or follow a leader to the trail head. The walk will be lead by members of the Russell County Bird Club.

To reach the preserve  take Route 19 north from I-81 approximately 20 miles to Business 19 into Lebanon. At the 2nd traffic light turn left on Route 82 west. Go 1.1 mile to Rt. 640 (River Mountain Road) and turn right. Go 4.2 miles and turn left on Route 721(a gravel road). Go 0.8 mile to the parking area on the left.

Bordering Big Cedar Creek-a state scenic river-for two miles to its confluence with the Clinch River, Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve is named for a towering rock outcrop known locally as The Pinnacle. The Pinnacle is a sheer spire of Dolomite over 400 feet tall. The preserve also features Big Falls, a dramatic waterfall in Big Cedar Creek.

The geological diversity has led has lead to biological diversity including locally and globally rare plants and animals.

Please come join us. Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring water and a snack and enjoy a beautiful part of Southwest Virginia.
