Area Birders,
I apologize for the late post, but better late than never, because some of you
need to know what you missed out on. On Sunday, August 1, Larry McDaniel and I
(Roger Mayhorn) led a bird walk on Clinch Mountain in conjunction with the
Highlands Festival. The walk took place at the Raven Ridge Bed and Breakfast
and campground owned by Charles and Alona Kennedy at the top of Clinch
Mountain off Rt 80 near Hayter's Gap.
14 birders turned out for the event and a good time was had by all. In spite of
it being the slow time of the year a few good birds were seen including,
Black-and-white Warblers, American Redstart, Indigo Bunting and Blue-headed and
Red-eyed Vireos. Great looks were had by some of the group when a Broad-winged
Hawk flew from a nearby power line and began circling overhead.
After hiking back up the graveled road to Raven Ridge the group was greeted
with an unexpected treat. Alona Kennedy, who is an excellent cook, had made
Hummus Tahini with vegetables for dipping. She also had Spinach dip with flat
bread, and a couple of mouth watering pastries. One was a mixed berry pastry
with a flaky crust, made with Charles and Alona's home grown berries. Another
was a small pastry cup filled with a mixture of cool whip, cream chese with a
bit of lime juice and topped with a red wine berry. In addition there was a
large tray of fresh, sweet watermelon sections. The group sat on the deck of
the Raven Ridge Hummingbird cafe and gorged themselves ( at least some of us),
while watching the many Ruby-throated Hummers and enjoying the view of the
distant mountains.
You should have been there,
