On Friday night (4/5/02) Kevin & Misty Hamed observed a Barn Owl sitting
along hwy. 11E approx. 0.5 miles (towards Johnson City) from the main
intersection in Piney Flats. The owl appeared stunned and allowed me to get
within 6 inches of it. After contacting Vanessa Hawley (wildlife
rehabilitator) the decision was made to catch the bird and take it to her.
Misty and I cornered the owl so it would not jump into the road. Just
before capture the owl flapped its wings and pulled its self into a small (7
feet tall) cedar tree. The owl then flew towards Mary Hughes Middle School
with both wings flapping. Vanessa thought the owl had been grazed by a car
and should be OK.
