Dan Long, former biology faculty member at Virginia Highlands
Community College at Abingdon, VA called in a few bird reports
of interest during recent weeks.

He saw an adult Bald Eagle flying down stream on the North Fork
Holston River about two miles above Hiltons in Scott Co., VA.
He was fishing by boat on the river, 6 July 2010, when the eagle
was seen at low and close range.

A couple of miles further upstream on the North Fork Holston
River, in Scott Co., Long observed a small heron rookery
20 June 2010 while float fishing the river. He said birds were
present but appeared to be somewhat smaller than Great Blue
Herons. He plans to take another look and see if he can
determine the species.

The owner of the property where the Bald Eagles' nest is located
in Burkes Garden, Tazewell Co., VA, called me Tuesday, 6 July,
and said the banded young eagle had not yet fledge the nest.

Let's go birding . . . .
