When Urban Wildlife Is Smarter Than The Birders ! A pair of Black Vultures knew very well they were hanging out with good people when they decided to nest on the big wrap-around concrete porch of the Bays Mountain Nature Center at Kingsport, TN this breeding season. Michele Sparks took this fascinating photo of two nestlings, 3 June 2008, as they perched on the porch railing waiting on one of their parents to arrive with more juicy and virtually-digested carrion. The female picked a spot in the corner of the porch next to an exterior stone wall, a glass window at the center's hallway and the glass door leading inside. To make it more comfortable for the incubating bird, the center staff created a privacy screen by covering all of the glass from the inside with dark materials. Visitors and birders are having an absolute field day standing a few feet further down the hallway as they watch the minute-by-minute drama of raising baby vultures. Cameras have recorded many great moments of this unique nature center "display." In addition to our photographer getting great pixs, Zellie Earnest, Bill Grigsby, Carolyn Coffey and Wallace Coffey had an absolutely delightful nature experience and enjoyed this amazing show to the fullest. Tickets are on sale at the entrance station at the bottom of the mountain for the low, low price of $3.00 per car or $12 per bus :-). http://www.baysmountain.com/ Let's go birding......
