The Bristol Bird Club's June 2008 meeting was held Tuesday with a productive work session which formulated plans towards current projects, upcoming events and new activities. President Dave Worley announced that Ethel Mason, mother of BBC Treasurer Janice Martin, passed away earlier in the afternoon. She will be taken to Williamson, SC for burial and a future memorial service will be planned for Bristol. She was a friend of the BBC and a regular participant at Christmas parties and the annul club picnics. Seven birders made pledges to help fund the second edition of Rick Knight's book, The Birds of Northeast Tennessee. It will be published this summer by the Bristol Bird Club. This brings to 24 the number of birders pledging so far. Participation has been brisk and generous. The fund raising drive now has reached 70 percent of goal. BBC members pledging to the project to date include: Wallace Coffey, Carolyn Coffey, Ellen Parker, Charlie Parker, Victoria Hanson. Zellie Earnest, Todd Eastin, Lynn Eastin, Roy Knispel, Chris O'Bryan, Judy Roach, Michele Sparks, Bill Grigsby, Wilma Boy, Mike Poe, Larry McDaniel, Susan Hubley, Dave Worley, Lisa Tyler, Gail Lane, Rob Biller, Mary Erwin, Judy Roach and Bert Hale. Three checks have been received. Ellen Parker announced that her effort to secure funding at a called meeting of the board of directors of the Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park had been successful. The board donated $500. Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center telephoned this morning to report the group's check will be mailed today. Zellie Earnest has been told that Bays Mountain Nature Center will contribute and the board of directors of the Kingsport Bluebird Society has also voted to contribute. Zellie has a pledge request before both organizations and he and Bill Grigsby are following up on that effort. Rick Knight and Wallace Coffey announced that Rob Biller has joined the team effort to produce the book. Biller will be responsible for map planning and design. Mike Poe reported to Coffey that he now has received thirty-seven photographs for the book. The more notable ones would be the Swallow-tailed Kite and the photos of the first nesting of a Willow Flycatcher in the area that Bryan Stevens submitted. Also Bryan sent a nice photo of a Cackling Goose with a Canada Goose that gives a good comparison. Rob Biller reported late last night that he had talked with Ron Carrico and they feel certain they have photos of the male Harlequin Duck which was at the weir a few years ago. Bert Hale brought five nice photos to the meeting and Michele Sparks submitted a CD with 24 photos. Poe also reported that Kevin Elam, former naturalist at the Steele Creek Park Nature Center who is working on a masters degree at Virginia Tech, has sent photos for the book. It appears that nearly 70 photos/images have been submitted for consideration. The 100+page book will be full process color. Tom McNeil has finished composition of the many pages of date tables for species which will be included. The manuscript is ready and edited with minor changes pending. Mike Poe has completed several page designs which he will have ready for consideration in a few days. If you have not yet pledged to the publication, please send your pledge in increments of $10.00 to Wallace Coffey at wallace@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx You will received one book for each $10 contributed or you may simply state how many books you will pledge for and contribute as much above the actual book pledge rate as you wish. Many birders do that. Birders have started paying their pledges. If you would like to pay your pledge now, mail a check for your pledge amount payable to the Bristol Bird Club and mail to Wallace Coffey, 100 Bellebrook Drive, Bristol, TN 37620. Bill Grigsby and Mary Erwin will be leading the Funfest bird walks that will be at 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM at Bays Mountain Park on Saturday, July 13th and Wednesday, July 16th. The walks will meet in the parking lot in front of the nature center. The BBC summer picnic will be held at the Steele Creek Park Civitan Shelter on Saturday, July 26, 3:30 p.m. The club's annual banquet is set for Friday, Sep 19. Arrangements and details are still in the planning stages. President Worley announced that Larry McDaniel and Assistant Treasurer Ron Harrington will again hold the club's annual hawk watch field trip to Mendota Lookout on Clinch Mountain on Saturday, Sep 20. Club members expressed an interest in again being a sponsor of the annual Hawk Migration Festival in the community of Mendota at the foot of Clinch Mountain in Washington Co., Va. The club will consider returning to the annual Cranberry Festival in Shady Valley this October to hold its "bog watch" birding event.
