Made a run thru Steele Creek Park this afternoon with the official
temperature at 102 degrees to
see if people were using the park and what conditions might be like
in regards to the BBC picnic.
I was surprised to find all of the shelters being used and a big
crowd sitting out and enjoying the
Civitan Shelter where we have our event (scheduled for July 7).
And all of the shelters had people
with grills fired and cooking. It was important to check the
Civitan Shelter because it is on a very
large concrete slab that is not shaded from the sun.
The number of people in the park was dramatically down from what
would be normal.
We will carefully monitor weather conditions as next weekend
approaches. It is too early to tell
exactly what is a reliable forecast. We've made a policy, for
many years, to never call off the event
because of rain and it has never let us down. The best picnics
we've had came right behind a
big summer rainstorm which hit while we huddled in our
shelters.
But record high temperatures are a
different problem. It is a health issue and a physical danger
that
does not go away like a 30 min. rainstorm. We will be extra
careful in making a decision about
heat. We are not going to back down from a hot day. We
will back down from a dangerous day.
There was a very good crowd enjoying the park in many ways today with the
temperature at 102,
the hottest day for any June day in the region's history.
It was neat to see that the Bristol Tennessee Police Department
Community Policing Patrol was
again in the park and that is new this summer. Today was not
their first day. They were staying
in the park and patrolling every 10 minutes or so well into the
evening. They were carrying an ice chest with extra
water in case they had to go off road into the 2000 acres of the park to rescue
anyone and water is the first thing you take to anyone having heat and
survival problems.
You just don't want anyone going down, the officer told me. He
said it becomes a major rescue and
emergency operation if someone goes down in the remote areas of the
park because of heat.
And even if the BBC has a warmer than usual day, we will bring an
extra large supply of water for all
of our members at the picnic and it will be on ice and we'll make
sure everyone has enough. We will
not depend on you to make sure you have enough water. We can do
that and we will do that.
Any decision about the picnic or the weather will be a joint one
made by our leadership.
The purpose of this message is to let you know that we are
watching and thinking and we will watch when picnic time comes
around.
